Nervousness Is Bad

As I write this I am nervous. Mostly for K.D. Lang who is wearing a man’s suit during the Vancouver Olympics Opening Ceremonies. But I digress…Nervousness can be a complicated medical condition. I’m sure it is terrible to deal with on a daily basis. We all get nervous. Some get nervous before exams. Others feel nervousness before a 5k run. Singers probably get nervous before performing in front of an audience. Sometimes I get nervous before I announce in front of a large crowd. The nervous I have an issue with is the nervousness of others that makes me nervous. Got that? You know who I’m talking about. Nervous Ned, your neighbor. Nervous Nelly, your colleague. Nervous Noreen, your aunt. They can’t hold conversations. They drop writing utensils on the ground when speaking. They fidget–a lot. They say things that are completely off base because they’re so nervous they can’t think straight. When a problem arises or something unexpected happens, Nervous Nelly handles it with the ease of an irate toddler. Calm is not in Nervous Ned’s vocabulary. These are people whose arms you’d like to grasp and shake rapidly. That’s all I got. (this just in, the Olympic torchbearers look quite nervous because something is wrong)

Well put, SulliDad. Everyone gets nervous, but nervousness is usually reserved for defining moments, not meaningless Tuesday morning meetings.

I like this William James quote that touches on the topic:

“Our errors are surely not such awfully solemn things. In a world where we are so certain to incur them in spite of all our caution, a certain lightness of heart seems healthier than this excessive nervousness on their behalf.”
